There, Not There
Ornamental Tiles
2021/ Bronze, foam, patinaThis collection is a model-based installation exhibition that challenges the idea that ornamentation is non-essential to architecture. Instead, it explores a notion of ornament which transgresses the boundary between architectural form and aesthetic object through the lens of material exploration.
Drawing from the uniqueness of natural forms – the fact that no two shells are identical – and the use of these forms within ornamentation in baroque architecture, this project began by creating unique sculptural tiles.
The tile carving process was inspired by time-enduring ornamental rocks and shells found in 16th Century Italian Renaissance garden of Villa d’Este.
