During my time at NAC, I used a hand-crafted steam box to question how we view and engage with design materials by elevating fragile, leftover off-cuts of local birch trees into sculptural objects. By drawing a connection between the material pliability of birch and its role in the cycle of forest rebirth, I chose to investigate how thin sections of birch from the Curonian Spit could be bent into continuous shapes using circular moulds. The orange colour of the construction straps used during the wood bending and the photographic accompaniments of autumn invites to dwell on our own perceptions and understanding of Neringa’s landscape as ‘natural’.
